And here is the surprise! Who wants to wait until Monday anyway?
Does the above image look familiar to you at all? For two years that was my blog. The Healthy Cookie. This blog began a few days after my doctor handed me a life sentence. Crohn’s Disease. His advice essentially was for me to go ahead and eat cheese burgers and drink milk shakes. “You are young and have to live you life. Nothing you eat will really make much of a difference.” He went on to explain that there were great medications and procedures that could help me better manage the symptoms of this socially debilitating disease.
In that moment my life was turned all sorts of upside down as I contemplated my options. I had been sick for three years and when at last was told what was wrong, I was angry that I had been ignored and brushed off by nearly 20 doctors over that period. I also had this inkling in my upset stomach that there were other options.
A few days after my Crohn’s diagnosis, I started the blog The Healthy Cookie.
I knew that I needed to get the anger out before I could even attempt to get better. That was the purpose of the blog; a means to express what had been building in me for the years I had been sick. It took me two weeks before I was ready to hit publish and when I did, the response was overwhelming. I realized that I was far from alone in my struggle and so I kept writing.
This blog documented what I went through with doctors, my 100% natural and holistic approach to healing, my time in nutrition school, touches on a relationship or two and concludes with the beginning of my own practice in nutrition.
Due to the incredibly personal content, once I opened my professional practice, I chose to remove this blog from public access. I have since gone through the content, though I didn’t edit what i wrote, I removed what no longer served the story filled in some blanks, added some insights, a few photos and put it together in an e-book form.
This is not a guide on how to get you well (that book is in the writing stages, though papers are signed with an agent and hopefully sells to a publisher this fall). The Healthy Cookie: Unbaked is the story of how I got well. More than anything, it documents my discovery of life lessons that don’t just apply to Crohn’s but that can help anyone going through any kind of challenge. As my mom put it, this experience was my PhD on life.
What I am now ready to share is a journal that documents the greatest transitional period of my life (so far). And wow oh wow am I nervous about suddenly putting all this out there. In the last couple of months however, I have received dozens of emails from people asking not for nutritional advice but wanting to know what I did and what I went through to get better. So now, on the three year anniversary of my first trip out to LA to meet Dr. Ha, the man who played the greatest role in my healing, I am ready to share this story.
The 180 page e-book will be available on Thursday starting at 7:00am (EST) for download at a special promo rate of $10.99 (CAD) and will will be available at that price for 24 hours before it goes up to $13.99.
All this week, I will be sharing excerpts from the book and of course, some of my favourite Healthy Cookie recipes.
Fewf! It’s out there now! No turning back.
